The Aqua Collection Electronic chlorinators convert salt into chlorine and therefore it is very important to maintain the proper salt level in the pool for optimal operation.
Type of Salt
The Aqua Collection electronic chlorinators use ordinary food grade or water softener salt. It is usually available in building supply stores in 40-80 pound bags labeled "Coarse Solar Salt". Never use rock salt or salts that have "anti-caking agents", "yellow prussiate of soda", or "sodium ferrocyanide" added. These compounds may cause staining of the pool.
There are many suitable brands of salt, the following list are the only ones that we have tested: - Cargil Kiln Dried Coarse Salt-99.8% pure NaCl.
Commonly available on west coast. - Cargil Diamond Crystal Solar Salt-99.6% pure NaCl,
Commonly available on east coast. - Cargil Duracube Salt-99.8% pure NaCl, in pellets.
- Cargil #7517 Hygrade Evaporated Salt-99.7% pure NaCl, granular
- Cargil CMF-50. CMF means calcium and magnesium free, 50 lb. Bags
- Morton 999 Purex Salt Granular-99.9% pure NaCl with no yellow prussiate of soda
Determining the amount of salt to add
For existing pools, the first step is to measure the existing salt level in the pool. All of the chlorine that has been added to the pool since the water was last changed eventually reverted to salt and you may be surprised how much salt is already in your pool. Next determine the size of your pool in gallons:
Rectangular pool = (length) x (width) x (average depth) x 7.5 Round pool = (diameter) x (diameter) x (average depth) x 5.9 Oval pool = (length) x (width) x (average depth) x 5.0
Use the chart below to determine the amount of salt to add based on the current salt level and the size of your pool:

How to Add Salt
Most people simply dump the salt into the shallow end of the pool and then brush it around to speed up the dissolving process. Do not allow the salt to sit in a pile at the bottom of the pool. Salt water is heavier than fresh water so the salt water will tend to accumulate at the deepest part of the pool. Run the filter system with the suction coming from the main drain for 24 hours to evenly distribute the salt throughout the pool.
Salt Display
The salt display is updated once every 100 minutes and responds slowly to rapid changes in salt level. Because of this and the time it takes for the salt to be evenly distributed in the pool it may take up to 24 hours before the salt display on the chlorinator is correct. Be patient and do not over-react by adding too much salt. |
