The concept is simple and revolutionary. You add a small concentration of regular salt (sodium chloride) to your swimming pool. Electrolysis converts the salt to chlorine....accurately, precisely, uniformly and without any need for you to have to handle or store chlorine ever again!
As many as 75% of all pools in Australia are salt water pools. The idea caught on there over the last 25 years. Goldline Controls, a master at quality electronics for the pool industry, has perfected the technology and thousands of these systems are being installed in pools in the US every month. Not only do you do away with chlorine but you have the ability to control the levels electronically so you can maintain that low concentration consistently that reduces the need to shock the pool.
Goldline's Electro-chlorinators have the added ability to superchlorinate the pool with the flick of a switch or through programming of your existing pool or home automation system. That's something I don't believe the Australian made systems of the last 25 years can do. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
The big kicker for me was that the electrolytic process not only produces the chlorine. It also converts the chloramines (the nasty carcinogenic byproducts of chlorine sanitizing) back to salt. The only salt consumed is the salt that actually changes to chlorine and does work as a sanitizer and oxidizer. The result is a reduced level of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in the pool at any one time. In my own mind this makes a backyard swimming pool much less of a human soup.
You know how you can come out of a pool feeling bleached? I hate that.. and I hate having to store and handle toxic chemicals with kids around. I liked the idea and the manufacturer so much I am recommending the salt water system to all my existing customers with solar pool heaters. Solar has been my livelihood for 16 years.
